The ECE Annual Awards Ceremony was held on May 10, 2022. The department has established a tradition of celebrating the achievements of all its graduates and recognizing the outstanding students during this ceremony. A new feature of this year’s ceremony was a student research poster showcase in which undergraduate students presented their capstone design projects and graduate students presented their latest research to the attendees.
The guest speaker was Dr. Justin Fanelli, Technical Director for the Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic.
Claudio Martinez

Yuhao Yao
3 graduating students–Claudio Martinez, Nathan Pen, and Yuhao Yao - were awarded the 2022 Outstanding Student Award for their distinguished academic excellence in the Bachelor of Science program in Computer Engineering, Bachelor of Science program in Electrical Engineering, and Master of Science program, respectively. Claudio plans to work as a Software Engineering in the Technology Development Program at Capital One in McLean, VA; Nathan plans on continuing at GWU as part of the 5-Year program to earn his Master’s in Electrical Engineering, focusing in Photonics and MEMs; and Yuhao is currently looking for a job related to ASIC and SOC design, using what he directly learned in his studies to jumpstart his career.
Dr. Shijing Li
Dr. Hao Zheng
Drs. Shijing Li and Hao Zheng were awarded the 2022 Best Dissertation Award in recognition of conducting impactful research resulting in high-quality publications and an outstanding doctoral dissertation. Dr. Li’s dissertation was on intelligent approaches to optimizing edge data transmission and storage, and Dr. Zheng’s dissertation was on machine learning enabled network-on-chip design and manycore architectures. Dr. Li is currently seeking a position as either a research scientist or a network engineer, and Dr. Zheng is an assistant professor of ECE at the University of Central Florida where he and his group are conducting research in the area of computer architecture, interconnection networks, and A.I. systems.
Dr. Benjamin Bowman
The reviewing faculty committee for the Best Dissertation Award thought another student was worthy of praise, but could not provide the honor to 3 recipients. Therefore, a special award was provided, for innovation and entrepreneurship, to Dr. Benjamin Bowman, in recognition of technological innovation and entrepreneurship exhibited in his dissertation on graph techniques for next generation cybersecurity.
Samual Farid
Samuel Farid was named 2022’s Best Graduate Teaching Assistant in recognition for his demonstrated excellence in teaching responsibilities and earned the praise of both students and the professors he assisted, performing his duties in a most caring, knowledgeable, and empathetic fashion.
