George Washington University’s (GW) Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) provides leading edge programs in electrical and computer engineering in order to provide leadership in a rapidly evolving global information society in the service of humanity and to advance the state of knowledge in our disciplines by actively pursuing scholarly research for publication and dissemination.
This position is primarily a temporary/training position in which the incumbent plays a substantive role in planning and conducting research by using quantitative and qualitative methods to collect, analyze and report data activities. In collaboration with the Principal Investigator, this role will participate in the planning of independent research, will analyze and interpret data, will publish results, will represent the university at conferences and meetings, and may develop new theories and methodologies. This position may also help the Principal Investigator to lead and direct the work of lower level research staff. This role performs work under the supervision of experienced researchers.
Job Description Summary:
Specific responsibilities Include:
- Conduct research in PICs, opto-electronic devices, nanophotonics, photonic analog processors and neural networks.
- Design and execute tape-out processes and supervise/support cleanroom nanofabrication.
- Obtain and analyze experimental and theoretical data.
- Introduce new device architectures and research directions in nanophotonics, opto-electronics, RF-analog photonics, Si/SiN Hybrid photonics and plasmonics, analog and neuromorphic computing.
- Develop theories and novel concepts on nanophotonic device performance with focus on electro-optic and electro-absorptive modulation towards fJ/bit-efficient and 10-100 GHz-fast performance metrics.
- Build and improve optical and opto-electronic measurement setup(s).
- Conduct numerical simulations.

Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Doctoral degree in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Understanding of Silicon-photonics and foundry tape-outs. Hybrid Silicon photonics expertise preferred.
- Deep understanding in opto-electronic device: detectors, modulators, lasers, switches.
- Solid background in solid-state physics, photonics, and plasmonics.
- Experience in heterogeneous material to photonic integrated circuit (PIC) integration
- Detailed experience in electro-optic PIC and device characterization to include: high-speed, bit-error-rate-testing, extinction ratio, insertion loss, cavity resonances, silicon photonics device testing, fiber-to-chip coupling.
- Solid understanding of digital and analog data-processing, signal-to-noise, bit-error-testing, and other pertinent DC/RF-engineering required for device test.
- Understanding of analog, neuromorphic computing and signal processing.
- Optical nonlinear optics understanding and test skills are a plus.
- Understanding and skills of MPW foundry tapeouts and cleanroom procedures.
- Qualified in drafting and submitting scientific manuscripts including data- and image processing skills.
- Efficient collaborator and student mentorship qualities.
