Professor Tian Lan's research on "Per-Process Energy Accounting in Mobile Systems" is funded by a $220,000 National Science Foundation grant from 2013-2016. This research aims to solve a longstanding, hard problem in system research: how to determine the contribution by a process to the system energy consumption when multiple processes are active. Holding smartphone apps accountable for their energy consumption is critical for energy management and optimization. Our preliminary results using game-theory inspired accounting demonstrate up to 20% energy saving on latest Android devices.
